Limited Edition Disney’s Frozen PlayStation 4 to go on sale in Japan

Disney’s Frozen has been a monumental success at the box office in Japan, having spent 17 weeks in the top ten (with a record 16 straight weeks at #1). With the film earning over ¥24 billion in Japan ($240 million), Sony decided to get in on the action.

Sony will be releasing a limited edition Frozen PlayStation 4 exclusively in Japan. It is a 500GB PS4 that will feature a laser etching of Anna and Elsa on the cover of the hard drive bay. And that’s it. It will come at a cost of ¥42,980 (which is about $424 / £248 / 413 Kinder Bueno bars). Essentially the exclusive laser etching means that Frozen fans are paying about ¥2000 more when compared to the price of a standard PS4 console.

The limited edition console will go on sale from 16 July. Frozen is released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on the same day, yet strangely, the film will not be bundled with the console (though that could potentially change in the future).

There is currently no sign of a western release. If you’re feeling jealous then those of you in the US could alternatively customise your PS4 with one of the Frozen skins available at Decalgirl.

Hopefully, this merge into gaming will spread further rather than just etchings on a console (and Olaf’s Quest for the Nintendo DS). Maybe in the future we might see Anna and Elsa in Kingdom Hearts III?
