Pikotaro shot to fame with viral hit PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) back in 2016. He has since released singles about orange juice, and as well as singing with Sesame Street’s Elmo and Cookie Monster about cookies. As reported on Natalie, he has now uploaded a new video on his YouTube channel, this time collaborating with idol unit Momoiro Clover Z for his new song… Vegetable.
Members Ayaka Sasaki (pink), Kanako Momota (red), Shiori Tamai (yellow), Reni Takagi (purple) are credited as Momoclo-chan Z, which is what they go by in their children’s programme, Gu Choki Party (also wearing the same outfits).
Vegetable opens with a funky bass guitar riff as they then sing mostly about tomatoes and petit tomatoes. However, they do also sing about potatoes, pumpkins and parsley. Neither of these vegetables are actually seen in the video as they sing and dance in a plain white room. In the end, they do have a brief discussion, where Kanako asks about pineapples.
Pikotaro calls Vegetable a companion song to PPAP and that working with Momoclo-chan Z was a dream, calling them “Japan’s best idol”. He also notes that the video was carefully edited by comedian Daimaou Kosaka (his real self) and viewers should pay attention to each detail. Vegetable is released digitally in Japan on 7 March 2018.
